Repsol Chairman Sets Priorities For Energy Industry

Repsol Chairmon Antonio Brufau has argued that the top priority for the energy industry should be the continued production of hydrocarbons to meet growing energy demand. Speaking at a plenary session of the World Petroleum Congress - entitled Solutions for Global Energy Challenges: Regulatory Certainty, Environmental Protection and Geopolitical Co-operation – he predicted that fossil fuels will continue to represent 75% of the total fuels used worldwide in 2035 as global energy grows by 40% by that year.

Brufau set out key priorities for the industry in the years to come. “Our top responsibility is to continue producing hydrocarbons to meet demand, guaranteeing supply at competitive prices. But that is not nearly enough. We must also set two goals that are equally important. On the one hand, we must fight against unacceptable inequalities in terms of access to energy,” he said. “Secondly, it is necessary to provide this energy as sustainably as possible.”

Brufau also noted that his company’s deep-water technology would contribute to energy security in the future. “Repsol will maintain and reinforce its commitment to exploring offshore in Brazil, the Gulf of Mexico, in American and Cuban waters, and in West Africa,” he revealed.

Finally, Brufau argued that developments in technology and world affairs demanded creative solutions from companies and policymakers alike, and called for everyone concerned with energy to break with past methods of doing business. “In this new situation it is best to put aside unshakable axioms and replace them with imagination and a capacity for innovation,” he said.
