A survey of EU policymakers commissioned by The European Chemical Industry Association (CEFIC) shows that officials still see the chemicals sector and the products it produces as important to society, but note that public trust is a significant issue. 72% of respondents, drawn from across the three main EU policy-making bodies, described the industry as central to innovation and growth, while 90% afreed that the sector makes an important contribution to the EU economy.
Respondents, however, were aware that the industry does not benefit from widespread public trust. Qualitative research from interviews revealed that policymakers tended to rate the industry as a respected contributor to society, but did not see it as presenting a credible, practical vision for the future "The results show that policymakers find it difficult to support the sector due to its perceived lack of transparency in the eyes of other groups and the general public. The industry needs to be on the front foot, go out, show passion, and innovate in the way we engage," said CEFIC President Giorgio Squinzi.
