Representatives of the Crown Oil Company recently pledged to members of
City Council that it was prepared to address safety concerns at its
former Getty station at South Broadway and Route 50.
The word came after Public Safety Commissioner Ronald Kim and Public
Works Commissioner Anthony Scirocco told the company in a June 24
meeting that the property's abandoned structures were in disrepair and
in violation of state and city code violations.
The property has been vacant for more than 10 years. The city wants
Crown Oil to remove the former gas station's steel canopy, two
outbuildings and islands that have bolts sticking out of them. The site
had become a favorite for skateboarders in the city.
Crown Oil will start the work soon, the councilmen said. "This will
have a great impact on the appearance of our city and downtown area,"
Scirocco said. Company officials could not be reached for comment.
