A Smarter Driver Challenge team backed by Shell has broken the world record for the most fuel-efficient drive across Canada.
The team drove a Volkswagen Passat from one side of the country to the other on just five tanks of fuel, Shell announced in Vancouver.
The team, which included Alex Debogorski from television’s Ice Road Truckers and Lorraine Sommerfeld, an auto columnist working at the Globe and Mail newspaper, ran the vehicle on Shell’s nitrogen-enriched bronze gasoline and used its lubricants to maintain its condition.
Shell said that the drivers ran the Volkswagen at 30% lower emissions than the manufacturer’s stated figures, a feat it accredited to its bronze gasoline and lubricants. The company struck a partnership with two Canadian NGOs, Pollution Probe and the Pembina Institute in order to promote the trip’s green credentials.
“Shell has long been an advocate and recognised leader in the area of fuel-efficiency,” said Shell Strategic Relations Manager Ashley Dixon. “Our efforts around the Smarter Driver Challenge and partnerships with Pollution Probe and the Pembina Institute are another in a long line of initiatives to help people use less fuel.”
