Law enforcement officials in Mexico have found a seemingly-legitimate fuel service station acting as a distribution point for stolen fuel. The station, which was operated until 2010 under the Pemex brand, still carries official logos, and company officials said it was the first occasion that a station had been discovered selling stolen fuels.
The illicit station, based in the northern city of Monterrey, had 12,690 gallons of stolen gasoline - worth roughly $77,000 - on-site. The station came under suspicion as it had not received a legitimate delivery of fuel in some time.
Previously, improvised illicit stations had been discovered in fields, industrial buildings and vacant sites. Pemex, which lost an estimated 2.99m barrels of oil in the first 11 months of 2011 to theft, is conducting a random audit of stations nationwide to precent fuel loss.
