Local and national media outlets in Brazilian report that Petrobras CEO Jose Sergio Gabrielli may leave the company to pursue political office in 2013. Gabrielli, who has headed the company since 2005, has been linked with a post in his home state of Bahia, paving the way for a possible tilt at the Governorship of the state in 2013.
Gabrielli, who has close ties to the ruling PT party, has been linked with a political career for some time. He has traditionally deflected questions about any political ambitions and, in an interview with Reuters on Sunday, did not confirm his departure. Rather, Gabrielli said, he is attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, as the Chief Executive of Petrobras.
Senator Humberto Costa, leader of the Government upper chamber bloc, added to the speculation. "[Gabrielli] might want to leave to be a candidate for the government of Bahia, so he might want to leave Petrobras to set up his candidacy," he remarked. Petrobras's Director of Gas and Energy, Maria das Gracas Foster, has been named as a possible candidate for the role.
