Petrobras has announced the appointment of Maria das Graças Foster (pictured) as the company's first ever female Chief Executive. Ms Foster will take over from current Chief Executive José Sérgio Gabrielli, who is leaving the company to pursue a political career, in February.
Foster, an experienced engineer and company veteran, is currently Director of Gas and Energy. She joined Petrobas in 1978 as a trainee, and hails from Rio de Janeiro.
According to a company statement, Finance Minister Guido Mantega “has already indicated he will put a proposal before the next meeting of the board of directors, on February 9," to ratify Foster's appointment. Foster has a strong relationship with President Dilma Rousseff, who chaired the company board during her time as Energy Minister, and served under Rousseff as head of the Ministry's Oil and Natural Gas Department.
