State-owned fuel marketing company Indian Oil Corporation has requested that an industrial police station be set up in the area around its Paradip refinery site. The request comes three months after violence outside the facility led to its temporary stoppage of work on the building. The complex will be capable of producing around 15m tonnes of oil products per year once it is operational.

July’s violence led to seven people being injured from shots fired by the Central Industrial Security Force – an Indian security organisation – after an altercation. Officials have said that issues with labour and criminality in the local area were the main reasons for the fighting.

Despite continuing problems with the project, officials have said that the refinery will be completed. “We are on course to commission our project in September 2013. Around 72% of construction work is already over. Overall about 88% of the project has been completed,” said Madhusudan Vijaywagariya, a senior official at the refinery. Vijaywagariya made his comments at a meeting held by the Chief Secretary of the refinery, Bijay Patnaik.
