Shell's South African operation has declared "force majeure" on a number of fuel deliveries in the country, confirming that the large truck driver strike in the country is preventing it from fully honouring its delivery commitments.

More than 20,000 truck drivers remain on strike, seeking a double-digit percentage increase in their wages. The strike action has included roadblocks, preventing trucks from leaving depots to make deliveries.

"We are still getting products to retailers but the delivery has been impacted by the strike," said a Shell spokeswoman. She added that the company is delivering lower amounts of fuel to petrol stations, and that some stations in Guateng province (which includes Johannesburg) are not getting all their supplies. Sasol also said that it has "received reports of certain products not being available at specific sites."
