Compressed natural gas is set to be phased out of fuel service stations in Pakistan as the fuel supply cannot be maintained. The announcement was made by Dr Asim Hussain, an advisor to the Prime Minister on petroleum and natural resources (pictured). Shortages have become especially prevalent in the winter months, he said, explaining the timing of the announcement.

Pakistan uses more CNG than any other country in the world. Iran, Argentina and Brazil are also among the largest users.

The first CNG users to have their supply cut off will be the public as the country does not have the reserves available to serve it and public transport. "We can provide CNG to public transport but can't make it for luxurious vehicles," said Asim.

The advisor also said that the government is taking measures to make the transition back to traditional fuels easier for CNG-powered vehicle owners. "Negotiations are underway with American gas companies for the import of 3 BCFD of LNG to the country," said Asim.
