The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has issued a questionnaire to fuel retailers as part of its investigation into the UK petrol and diesel fuel sector. the regulator is currently seeking to identify whether there are competition problems that it can resolve.
In the questionnaire, retailers are asked to explain how competition works at the retail level of the supply chain and to provide information on how they set retail prices. The OFT is also seeking to devine how crude oil price movements impact on pricing at the fuel service station level.

If the OFT determines that there are competition problems in the market, it could undertake further work to consider referring the market to the Competition Commission for in-depth analysis, launch a specific market study into aspects of the market, seek voluntary action from industry participants, or undertake enforcement.
