A pre-pay system could be introduced in Ontario after a drive-off incident led to the death of a man in Toronto. The system could mirror that of a law introduced in British Columbia in 2008, Grant’s Law, which was passed by the state after the death of Grant DePatie, who was killed by someone attempting to steal fuel.

“The public doesn’t seem to be aware that this is not a victimless crime, this is a serious threat to these workers on the spot,” said Mike Colle, an Ontario lawmaker who is petitioning for the introduction of the system.

Drawing up a bill for an effective system could prove troublesome says Tricia Anderson, president of the Canadian Independent Petroleum Retailers Association, who points out that many retailers in the country already require customers to pay before they pump.
