British trading standards officers have been
testing the accuracy of fuel pumps on the service stations of
Derbyshire for the last year - checking a total of 730 nozzles.
Over
the period in question, all but four service station site were found to
be "spot on" . The four sites were delivering over the prescribed
limit, meaning customers were actually receiving more fuel for their
money.
The implications for petrol retailers is the importance
of maintenance and regular checks by authorised and experienced service
station maintenance companies.
In the four months prior to June
last year, one garage was averaging losses of 2784 litres of petrol and
1044 litres of diesel because of the error. The pumps have now been
recalibrated, saving the retailer around £6,400.
Derbyshire
County Councillor for community safety, Clive Moesby, said: "Petrol
inspection may not seem like the most glamorous aspect of our work but
it is important in these days of rising fuel prices that people are
getting what they paid for.
