The House of Commons will debate a Government ePetition launched by FairFuelUK which attracted over 100,000 signatories. Parliament’s Back Bench Business Committee voted to debate the petition, which was only the third e-Petition to reach the required level of support for a debate since the Government introduced the facility.
The petition calls for a number of changes to Government policy on fuel, including the cancellation of 4p Fuel Duty increases scheduled for January and August 2012, the introduction of a price stabilisation mechanism and the establishment of a commission to examine market competitiveness and “radical ways of cutting fuel taxes in the longer term”. It also calls on the Government to “pressure big oil companies to pass on cheaper oil to motorists.”
Campaign founder Peter Carroll said he was “delighted” that the issue would be debated. “We thank Robert Halfon MP for his sterling work in leading the All Party Working Group on FairFuelUK and every single person who signed the petition. With the economy stagnating, cutting fuel duty represents an effective and fair way of boosting growth, creating jobs and reducing inflation. Petrol and diesel prices are crucifying families and businesses. This issue needs to be debated and action taken,” he added.
