Britain’s undersecretary at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs John Taylor (pictured) has said that fuel service stations will not be shut because of the new Fuel Vapour Recovery Stage II EU directive, which comes into force on January 1. Seeking to reassure retailers, Taylor said that the legislation would apply to new stations and stations that undergo major refurbishments from next year, and to larger existing stations from 2018.
“I know concerns have been raised about how the changes will impact on existing small petrol stations,” said Taylor. “It has been mentioned, for example, that the changes might result in the closure of rural petrol stations. This will not be the case.”
Taylor added an assurance that the Government valued smaller fuel service stations. “I want to assure you that we don’t expect any existing petrol stations to have to close as a result of the changes. The new requirements will only apply to existing smaller petrol stations if they undergo a major refurbishment,” he said.
Under the new directive, PVRII will have to be fitted to fuel service stations with a petrol throughput of over 3,000 cubic meters by 2018, while new stations with a throughput of over 500 cubic meters will have to be equipped with PVRII.
