HSBC’s new £150m data centre facility in Yorkshire is being installed with a specialist fuel pipework system, Durapipe PLX. The piping system has been installed to provide fuel oil for back-up power generators, ensuring that the data centre remains operational during emergencies or power failures.
The piping system, being installed by electrical and mechanical engineering contractors ASEE Ltd, is to be run underground, safely transporting fuel from a 30,000L holding tank to the eight bulk tanks which will in turn supply the day tanks. “The product material characteristics, and specifically the pipe-in-pipe aspect of the pipework as it could be monitored with a leak detection system above ground, was the deciding factor for us, as we needed to be confident we would not be accountable for fuel leaking out into the ground,” explains Stuart Davies of ASEE about the decision to use the Durapipe PLX system.
Durapipe PLX systems are specialist pipework solutions that convey a variety of fuel blends. Manufactured in a robust polyethylene material that’s resistant to long-term stress cracking, Durapipe PLX systems have a design life of 30 years, making them ideal for use in emergency power applications. The portfolio of systems include both close-fit and pipe-in-pipe secondary contained pipework systems in sizes from 32mm to 315mm. The Durapipe portfolio also has a wide range of fittings and transition fittings available to suit these systems.
