Asda set off a petrol price war after slicing 2p off the price of a
litre of unleaded and diesel, in the United Kingdom and Northern
Ireland.
Asda said that its prices were among the lowest in the UK even
before the move, which reduced the price of unleaded in all 179 servcie
stations to a maximum of 102.9p for unleaded and 103.9p for
diesel. The spokesperson added: “We are being specific about our prices
and are passing on the benefits of falling cost prices and the
weakening US dollar to the motorist, and call on other retailers to
follow our lead. Many are continuing to charge more than 107p for a
litre of fuel.
David Miles, Asda’s commercial director said: “Had Alistair
Darling not increased fuel duty last week, we could be looking at
prices back below the £1 mark. Nevertheless, our latest price cut is a
welcome move, and will help drivers make ends meet.”
The Asda move caught major competitors like Sainsbury’s and Tesco off
guard, with prices being charged mainly around the 107p.
mark.
