Turkey's top administrative court has cancelled a combined 1.6 billion
lira ($975 million) in fines against 28 of the country's fuel retailers.
Petrol Ofisi, Turkey's biggest chain of petrol stations and the local
units of Shell and BP were among the retailers fined by the
state energy regulator for selling fuel to unlicensed outlets. The
Ankara-based court ruled that the fines were not legal, Vatan said,
citing a court statement, but did not elaborate. The court had
previously suspended the case.
No one was immediately available at the Ankara-based energy regulator
to comment on the news. The biggest fine of 600 million lira was levied
against Petrol Ofisi, Vatan said. Opet, owned by Turkey's Koc Holding,
was fined 200 million lira, and BP was fined 70 million lira.
