Repsol has showcased its recently-opened fuel service station at Calle Alberto Aguilera in Madrid which, it says, points to the future, sustainable direction of fuel retail. Through considerable investment, the company has created the world’s first fuel service station with a Breeam certificate of sustainability.
The certificate issued by Breeam, a global assessor of sustainable building, covers environmental impact, optimised benefits of sustainability and efficient ways to maximise and monitor consumption of resources. The building, which is 100% accessible, also boasts a design that integrates it into the urban environment so well that it has the endorsement of the City Council’s Historic Heritage Committee.
Beyond these obvious signs, the materials used in construction have also been selected with an eye on sustainability. Recycled materials, including 7,00 newspapers for the walls and 64 kilos of sheep wool for insulation, have been ued, while the canopies have been reclaimed from another fuel service station.
Energy efficiency has been prioritised in the LED lighting used, while sustainable fuels are also catered for with a charging post for electric vehicles and a B20 biodiesel pump. The facility even includes a parking station for cyclists.
“From a construction standpoint, society will increasingly demand that service stations are friendly, accessible and sustainable,” says Repsol’s Director of Service Stations in Spain, Antonio Calçada, noting that the new focus on sustainability is just another stage in the rapid evolution of the fuel service station. “Within merely 30 years, we have gone from the old petrol pump on the street to stations where it is almost possible to do just about everything: refuel, shop, eat, rest and play,” he added.
