The Slovenian government has approached MOL with an offer for strategic
co-operation regarding fuel retail and wholesale company Petrol
according to local media reports.
Petrol itself admits there is communicaiton between the Slovenian Government but denies that this will lead to any direct partnership with MOL. Whenever Petrol's name came up as a potential target for MOL the Hungarian fuels group always played down speculations saying Petrol was not for sale.
Petrol owns Slovenia's largest fuel retailing network. The company deals exclusively with fuel sale, with a domestic market share of 68%. It operates 308 filling stations in Slovenia, 20 in Croatia, 36 in Bosnia and one in Serbia. The country's second-largest network of petrol stations, with 103 units, is run by Austria's OMV.
Nearly 30% of Petrol is in state hands, with a 20% package owned by institutional investors. Due to limited growth potentials on its home turf Petrol intends to expand on foreign markets. Its first step in this direction will be the acquisition of Montenegro's Bonus.
