Registration for the Rural Fuel Duty Rebate Pilot Scheme has now opened, following approval from the European Union and Parliament. The scheme offers a tax rebate of five pence per litre to retailers in the inner and Outer Hebrides, the Northern Isles, islands along the Clyde and the Scilly Isles.
Retailers of road fuel in these areas can register with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs for relief on fuel they purchase from January 1. Claims can be made on a monthly basis, and applicants then have 60 days to reduce the cost of every litre they sell by the relief claimed. This requirement, intended to ensure that consumers benefit from the scheme, has been given a 60-day lead-in period to prevent cash flow problems for retailers.
Retailers who wish to register for the screen must download and print the HO80 Claim for duty relief at this link [http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/briefs/excise-duty/brief4011.htm] and return it to HM Revenue and Customs, Mineral Oils Relief Centre, BP4002, Benton Park View, Longbenton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE981ZZ.
A separate registration is required for each fuel service station. For more information about the scheme, the Excise and Customs Helpline is available on 0845 010 9000.
