A new scheme to prevent crime at fuel service stations has been launched at Helensburgh in Scotland. Forecourt Watch, a joint initiative between Strathclyde Police, the British Oil Security Syndicate (BOSS) and independent retailers, will be rolled out in Helensburgh, Dumbarton and Clydebank.
The scheme, running in conjunction with Payment Watch, will see a closer working relationship between the police and staff at fuel service stations to increase awareness and reporting of incidents. It aims to help retailers recover money where customers leave without paying in full and to share information about ‘rogue customers’.
"We're pleased to be extending our partnership with Strathclyde Police which has already achieved some notable successes in apprehending persistent offenders. Our joint efforts are intended to support and benefit fuel retailers in both urban and rural areas,” said BOSS Executive Director Kevin Eastwood. "In more isolated areas the service station is a vital community resource and we're committed to ensuring they're a safe environment for customers and staff, targeting those people who drive off without paying for their fuel or use forecourts as a route to commit for serious crimes. By building successful partnerships with local police, retailers and other agencies through these initiatives we are able to deter and prevent crime on forecourts as well as bringing offenders to justice," he added.
