BP's Russian oil venture TNK-BP will export European spec diesel from
its biggest refinery via the new Baltic Sea terminal of Primorsk by the
end of the year, its chief operating officer said this week.
"We will be sending diesel from Ryazan to Primorsk by the end of the year," Tim Summers told a news conference on the embattled oil company's first half results. He did not give a specific date.
Earlier this month a second cargo was loaded at the new Primorsk terminal, which will handle diesel with a maximum sulphur limit of 10 parts per million, in line with European Union specification.
An industry source said then that only two refineries, LUKOIL's NORSI refinery and the Yaroslavl plant, jointly owned by Gazprom and TNK-BP, had firmly committed to supplying the pipeline, which links key export refineries with the port.
Earlier this year, TNK-BP's head of refining told Reuters in an interview the company's big refinery upgrade this year would be a 1.7 million tonne per year diesel hydrotreater which would bring Ryazan's diesel output up to European spec.
Most Russian diesel is sold domestically as 0.2, or 2000ppm sulphur material, but Russian refineries have been gradually upgrading their equipment to produce European standard material and already export some via rail to Baltic ports.
