Lukoil is partnering with Russia’s largest mobile operator, Mobile TeleSystems, smart card manufacturer Giesecke & Devrient and Sitronics Smart Technologies to launch a system of contactless payments at fuel service stations. The system will be piloted in the city of Perm using near field communication (NFC) enabled SIM cards.
Under the system, the cost of fuel purchases will be debited through an electronic cash function in a SIM card that Mobile Telesystems users will be able to activate. The wide commercial rollout of the scheme is set to begin later this month.
NFC technology has been gaining increasing popularity in Russia, with the Moscow Metro, the St Petersburg Metro and airport shuttle operator Aeroexpress running trials of contactless payments.
