Gazprom’s Deputy CEO, Alexander Ananenkov (pictured), has met with Manabu Miyagawa, Minister of Japan's Embassy to Russia, to discuss a possible partnership between Japan and Russia in energy. Their meeting focused in particular on potential plans for both Japanese companies and Gazprom to build an LNG plant in the Vladivostok area.
Miyagawa and Ananenkov discussed Japan’s rising demand for natural gas, according to a statement issued by Gazprom. "Highlighted was Russia's great potential as a source for possible LNG supply to Japan both from the Vladivostok area and through exchange operations between European and Asian markets," said the company. They also discussed the potential for supplying equipment to Gazprom enterprises and for Japanese companies to organise gas processing and production in the far east of the country.
In January, Gazprom signed an agreement with Japan's Natural Resources and Energy Agency and its Economic, Trade and Industry Ministry to prepare feasibility studies for joint natural gas use in the Vladivostok region. The trio also committed to jointly explore the transport and sale of gas from Vladivostock to the Asia-Pacific region. A consortium of Japanese companies, JAPAN FAR EAST Gas Company, has been formed to advance the agreement. Itochu, Japex, Marubeni, INPEX, and CIECO are participants in the consortium.
