The National Roads Authority (NRA) has signed a contract with the
Superstop consortium to build three motorway service areas which will
open for business in 13 months.
Up to 500 jobs will be created during construction, and another 250
jobs when the stations open late next year. Building the motorway
service area stations, which will have petrol forecourts, restaurants,
shops, HGV parking and shower facilities, will cost €120m.
The NRA will pay €47m towards the total cost of construction. The land
cost is estimated at €20m. Bank of Ireland will provide €70m to
Superstop to finance construction. Two of the stations will be
located on the M1 motorway linking Dublin and Belfast -- one in each
direction on the M1 at Castlebellingham, Co Louth, and at Lusk in north
Dublin. The other station is on the M4 linking Dublin to the west of
Ireland at Enfield, again with one northbound and one southbound.
But plans to have a dozen service areas on the five inter-urban
motorways by 2011 will be delayed. The NRA has been told by the
Department of Finance not to purchase sites because of the economic
situation.
