The gap in petrol retail prices has narrowed dramatically between the north and south in recent times.
Service stations along the border counties
have been forced to cut prices to hold onto customers from
the North. Eight years ago, fuel was 25 per cent cheaper on the southern side, a reversal of 20 years earlier. High fuel price differentials make it economic for motorists
to drive up to 40 miles to the border to refuel.
Within the last year, however, the price gap has narrowed dramatically, with sterling weakened by 20 per cent against the euro. The
lowest Northern prices are £1.11 (€1.41 cent) per litre for unleaded and
£1.24( €157.6 cent) for diesel, versus 127.9 cent and 133 cent on the
border in Donegal.
