Almost
8,000 fuel pumps at 1,300 service stations were inspected in 2010 by
the Natioanl Standards Authority. More than 2,000 warnings, which
require corrective action such as minor adjustments or recalibration of
equipment, were issued to traders. 1,400 of these were issued for fuel
pumps. However only 200 of these were related to calibration.
The National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) has confirmed it tested the calibration on 8000 fuel dispensers in the country during 2010 in its annual report. More than 1,400 warning notices about faulty fuel dispensers were issued by the NSAI, according to the report. Around 200 of these related to amounts of fuel suppliers at the nozzle, while the remainder were concerned with technical issues.
In some cases the owners of fuel service stations were losing out because the wrongly calibrated fuel dispensers were over delivering amounts of fuel to drivers. In other cases, however, motorists were getting less fuel than they were charged for. The report highlghts the importance of regular service maintenance for fuel service stations.
