Greek motorists have been queuing
at fuel service stations as the country's truck drivers begin a strike
in opposition to government plans to liberalize their sector.
Motorists formed long queues at fuel service stations, fearing that the truckers strike will lead to fuel shortages. Government spokesperson George Petalotis issued a warning and said, "Whoever thinks that these actions can go on does not know the law and does not seem to realize that the government will resolutely protect the public good."
Prime Minister George Papandreou reiterated that his freshly reshuffled cabinet is committed to push ahead with promised reforms, and said transportation was one of the sectors slated for liberalization. The government wants to open the transport market to full competition within three years to cut costs, which traders say will cause the price of many goods to increase.
