Workers at Petroplus’ Petit Couronne refinery in France are meeting with union representatives at nearby facilities with a view to calling a general strike. The workers are responding to the Swiss firm’s decision to shut down three refineries on a temporary basis as it continues to negotiate with its creditors.
Aside from the Petit Couronne site, refineries at Antwerp and Cressier have been identified for “temporary economic shutdowns”. A union official from Petit Couronne said the 550 workers met with peers from Total’s Gonfreville refinery and Exxon Mobil’s site at Port Jerome, and are preventing the company from moving refined products worth €200m from the plant.
