The head of the Petrol Retailers Association, Brian Madderson (pictured), has written to Downing Street to highlight the problems independent retailers are facing due to the sharp increase in the price of a tanker of petrol. In an open letter to the Prime Minister David Cameron, Madderson said that anti-competitive pricing, unfair business rates and restricted development opportunities are all issues the retailers have to contend with. He offered to meet the prime minister in person to discuss the issue.
“Oil companies and hypermarkets can afford to bankroll the Treasury but this historic arrangement is now financially crippling our independents,” Madderson wrote, while also reminding the prime minister that he is yet to receive a reply to his last letter.
Fuel duty and tax on a tanker of petrol ten years ago cost around £21,000, said the letter, whereas now the same tanker has charges of over £30,000 attached to it. The overall cost of the tanker – with a typical 38,000 litre storage – cost around £24,000 in 2002, compared to over £51,000 today.
