UPP Non-conductive Pipework – a leak proof, underground pipework and containment system
PetroTechnik’s UPP System is the world’s leading non-corrodible sump-to-sump flexible pipework and containment system for the transfer of flammable liquids underground. It has approvals in more countries than any other similar system.
First installed in Sweden in 1981, UPP is the original flexible
polyethylene pipe. Since its formation to innovate, manufacture and
distribute UPP in 1991, PetroTechnik has performed a major role in
establishing the global standard for flexible plastic pipework systems.
During a recent service station rebuild, tests showed that UPP pipe
installed in the 1980’s was still fit for purpose and would more than
likely last another 25 years. UPP pipework is approved for use with all
hydrocarbon fuels, methanol and ethanol blended fuels, BioDiesel, E85,
AdBlue and aviation fuels including JetA1, JP8, Avgas and Methmix.
UPP Extra primary pipe
Manufactured from high-density polyethylene, UPP Extra primary pipe is
extremely tough, corrosion resistant and, once installed, should need no
further maintenance. The black / orange outer structural layer of the
pipe is polyethylene grade PE80 or PE100. The yellow inner barrier layer
is a specially formulated fuel proof layer providing exceptional
resistance to absorption and permeation.
The smooth bore and low friction loss of UPP Extra pipe permits fuel and
vapour flows at higher velocities than steel pipework as a result of
lower hydraulic losses. UPP underground fuel pipe utilizes a Standard
Dimensional Ratio Design of 11 and is pressure rated to 10 bar (150 psi)
at 20°C. Rupture pressure is typically 40 bar (600 psi) providing a
generous margin of safety. There is no requirement for a concrete trench
because fusion welded HDPE pipe has no joints and is structurally
resistant to weight of backfill material and dynamic traffic loads.
Available in coils and straight lengths.
Secondary containment
UPP secondary containment double wall pipe consists of a co-axial pipe
sleeve co-extruded over UPP lined primary pipe. There is an
uninterrupted interstitial space between the primary and secondary pipe.
It is a real pressure pipe system and not just a jacketing conduit. It
also has its own range of fittings. There is a continuous annular
interstitial space running between the primary and the secondary pipe. A
test port can be added where the secondary pipe terminates and is
closed off against the primary pipe. This allows for continuous leak
detection of both primary and secondary pipe.
Available in coils and straight lengths. A secondary containment sheath
without UPP Extra pre-fitted is also available in straight lengths.
Duct pipe & retractability
PetroTechnik provides a large diameter flexible polyethylene duct pipe
designed to provide for future retraction of 1½" and 2" primary or
coaxial UPP product piping.
Nominal outer diameter measures of 110mm, inner diameter 94mm.
32mm Electrical Conduit
UPP 32mm orange electrical conduit for forecourt electrical systems
complements UPP’s range of petrol station forecourt solutions. Employing
the latest production technologies, UPP conduit is manufactured from
the best quality high density Polyethylene material using an extrusion
process which provides a bore of exceptional smoothness. A tough,
extremely smooth, specially formulated bonded nylon liner, running the
full length of every pipe, enables UPP conduit to achieve almost zero
permeation ensuring data and electrical cables remain protected from the
ingress of products. The orange 32mm conduit carries ½" and ¾" cables
underground in petrol station forecourts for providing power to
dispensers, pumps etc. It is supplied in 100 metre coils for simple
point-to-point installation.
Fittings and terminations
A complete range of fittings and terminations is available for both single wall primary pipe and double wall
• elbows and tees
• couplers
• reducers
• entry seals for fibreglass, polyethylene, steel and concrete chambers
Electrofusion welding
PetroTechnik was the first company to launch an automated electrofusion
process in 1986. It lies at the heart of the UPP system and is a highly
efficient thermal welding system which connects pipe and fittings to
create a seamless, leak tight, direct burial pipework system.
Completing the UPP pipework system
• chambers and sumps
• access covers
• system integrity testing equipment
• leak detection equipment
• installation tools including a light weight hand held welder
Testing
PetroTechnik’s UPP system integrity testing kit makes it easy to
tightness test the entire underground system during installation and
whilst the system is in operation. It can be used on a number of
underground pipework systems and not just UPP. The system is easy to use
with clear concise instructions. Transparent test lids give full
visibility of test areas.
Leak Detection
The UPP leak detection equipment continuously monitors the interstitial
space of secondary containment pipe. The system is mounted either inside
a kiosk or externally in a protected box. Any detected increase or
reduction in pressure results in the activation of a visible of audible
alarm.
