Vietnam is due to deregulate a number of markets in 2009 which includes
petrol retail. According to some sources, this may not now happen.
Vietnam is supposed to open up its domestic retail market as of early
2009 as part of its WTO commitments. This includes petrol, medicine and
print publication retail markets which are due to open as early as Jan
1, 2009 according to local news agency.
However the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported a senior
government official that this may not happen. It was also
reported that Deputy Minister of Industry Trade Le Danh Vinh told young
entrepreneurs at a dialogue event that the steel, cement and fertiliser
retail markets will not open within the next three years.
According to the deputy minister, foreign retailers are required to get
permits from the Ministry of Industry and Trade to open their second
sales agents in Vietnam.
