Thailand: Ban on Alcohol Imposed on Petrol Station Network

Public Health Ministry and Energy Ministry have cooperated in banning
liquor sales at service stations. Offenders are subject to six month
jail term or 10,000 THB fine. The measure is aimed to control the
accident from drunk driving.
Due to the high rate of accidents during New Year and Songkran which
derived from drunk driving, the Deputy Permanent Secretary for Health
said the Ministry has joined force with Energy Ministry to force all
petrol stations nationwide not to sell liquor according to the
Alcoholic Beverage Control Act 2008. Violators would be sentenced to
six months in jail or fined 10,000 THB, or both.
The Director-General of Energy Business Department added that to
prevent road accidents, the department was willing to support the ban
of alcoholic beverage sale in 18,000 petrol and gas stations around the
countries.
The statistics of people who died in road accidents during the New Year
Festival was one person every 14 minuets, and during the Songkran
Festival, one person every 21 minutes.
