The Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) has called for inspections at all 2,650 fuel service stations in Taiwan following the detection of leaks at a number of sites. The commission carried out random checks at 26 fuel service stations last week, and discovered that 13 dispensers at 11 sites were leaking.
CPC official Wu Cheng-Hsueh warned that the situation was a danger to public health and demanded that the Energy Bureau (part of the Ministry of Economic Affairs) investigate the country’s stations as soon as possible. The CPC has also called for the installation of devices to remove static electricity, along with shut-off buttons.
The Energy Bureau said that the defective pumps cited by the CPC had passed an inspection on December 9. It also noted that it has checked over 1,200 fuel service stations in the past six years.
