Shell has managed to resume some operations at its oil refinery in Singapore, just two weeks after a fire shut down work. “We can confirm that some operations have continued and some operations will resume at the site, but we are unable to comment on operational specifics,” said Serene Loo, a Shell Spokesman.
The Shell facility in has a capacity of 500,000 barrels per day, including a 210,000 barrel per day crude distillation unit. This is expected to reach stable operating levels within the next few days and operate at 50% capacity while the company investigates the causes of the fire. Sources told local reporters that other units of the refinery, including a 35,000 barrel per day hydrocracker and two crude distillation units of 110,000 capacity, will remain shut due to extensive damage. According to Singapore's Manpower Ministry, the fire at the 50 year old refinery reportedly began at a pump house while the company was preparing for maintenance work. It was the biggest such incident at the facility for 23 years.
