The Malaysian government plans to replace the RON 92 grade of petrol with RON 95 next year.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said the proposal would see the new RON 95 petrol would be priced the same as RON 92. He said the proposal was to give consumers a alternative for petrol but at the same time ensure high quality petrol.
He said most cars needed only RON 95 and not higher octane levels to operate. He said the proposal would be discussed with all oil companies on how best to implement this. "RON 97 grade is too high. We don't really need it but we will maintain two grades, which is RON 95 and RON 97."
