Police in Klang have urged owners of fuel service station to use a mobile application, MyDistress, to aid in crime prevention. The app, which allows members of the public to alert local police when they need emergency assistance, is growing in popularity according to South Klang District Police Chieve ACP Muhammad Mat Yusop, and has recorded 54,000 subscribers.
“The application should be installed by every petrol station operator in South Klang district as it is an effective way to prevent crime,” he said as he launched a community-policing programme at a Shell-branded fuel service station, adding that stations were prime targets for criminals. “They usually strike at night and take away cigarettes and small amount of cash. In some cases, these robbers have no qualms of hurting their victims if their demands are not met,” he added.
Mat Yusop added that the MyDistress app had led to 18 emergency calls being made in the Selangor area, most of them leading to arrests, but also stressed the need for higher quality CCTV cameras at stations. “There is no point of installing low quality CCTVs where we (the police) can’t even identify the suspects,” he said. The MyDistress application is compatible with Android, Apple, Symbian and BlackBerry phones.
