Petronas Dagangan will open its 1,000th Malaysian fuel service station later this month, part of the company’s drive to become the largest fuel retailer in the country. The retailer says it intends to sell around five billion litres of petrol this year as a direct knock-on from opening more stations, representing growth of 10% year-on-year. The company currently controls 31% of the country’s fuel retail market; Shell, the country’s largest fuel retailer, holds 35%.

The company says it hopes to become Malaysia’s largest fuel retailer in the next two to four years, and that its aggressive expansion strategy has so far seen it open 12 new stations in the first half of the year. Petronas Dagangen says it hopes to end the year with a total of 1,042 stations in operation, meaning it will have to open a further 74 before the end of the year to reach its target. Until now the company has opened an average of 30 stations a year, with its most recent total standing at 980.
