Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Datuk Ismail
Sabri Yaakob has announced that from May 1 , 2010 as petrol subsidies
will be reserved for Malaysians under a control system that uses the
MyKad.
The minister did not give details on how the system will work, but
explained that the just-announced policy of a 20-litre cap on fuel
purchase by foreign-registered vehicles at border towns was just the
first phase of a plan to prevent subsidised fuel distribution to non
nationals.
Ismail said the government did not set a target for savings from the
current fuel cap imposed on international cars at border regions. "We
do not look at it from how much money we will save. We just look at the
fact that lately, there has been an alarming level of smuggling of
petrol at the border, especially after the introduction of the RON 95
petrol in September as our prices are far lower than our neighbours in
Thailand and Indonesia, for example," said Ismail.
He added enforcement of the fuel cap would be done by Customs and
anti-smuggling personnel. "We have placed our officers at petrol
stations and at the border entry points. I call on petrol station
owners to help the government and act responsibly. I remind them that
if anyone defies our directives by selling more than 20 litres to
international motor vehicles, we can revoke his licence," said Ismail
Sabri.
