The State Legislative Assembly Speaker for Sabah, Datuk Salleh Tun Said, has praised the impact of Petronas on the country’s economy, describing the company’s presence since the early 1970s as a key economic catalyst for the region. Salleh Tun Said added that the company had contributed greatly to the development of the area, particularly in the oil and gas sector.
"Without doubt, Petronas is really committed in galvanising the state's oil and gas industry, which is in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's economic transformation programme," he remarked in a newspaper interview, pointing to Petronas’ investments of roughly RM61 billion in upstream and downstream activities within Sabah's petroleum sector. "This was a large sum of money, and the people of Sabah should be thankful to Petronas,” added Salleh Tun Said. “Petronas provides a substantial number of jobs and business opportunities to the locals, not to mention Sabah firms that are set to be awarded contracts worth some RM600 million in the Sabah Ammonia-Urea (Samur) plant project owned by Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd in Sipitang."
Petronas has announced major capital expenditure of RM45 billion to implement an integrated oil and gas master plan for Sabah, which incorporates several significant upstream and downstream projects. These include a RM3.8 billion Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT), a RM1.5 billion 300MW gas-fired power plant in Kimanis, a RM4.6 billion mega fertiliser plan in Sipitang and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) re-gasification terminal in Lahad Datu.
