ExxonMobil plans to open another 10 to 15 petrol stations this year
involving an investment of between RM10 million and RM15 million to
maintain its share of the petrol retailing market.

ExxonMobil Malaysia Area Manager Mohd Shaibi Ahmad Hijazi said "We hope
by continuing to invest in new outlets and doing a series of promotions
will help us to at least retain the current customers in view of the
current economic downturn,". The company currently has 530 petrol
stations nationwide, he told reporters at the launch of the Esso and
Mobil Smiles Drive rewards promotion.
Mohd Shaibi said ExxonMobil hoped to maintain its current market share
of 20 percent by carrying out a series of promotions and improving
customer services. He said the current economic slowdown has an impact
on petrol sales as customers tend to be more cautious with their
expenses but did not disclose any figures.
On the Smiles promotion, Mohd Shaibi said it was aimed at helping to
ease customers' financial burden amid the high cost of living during
the current global financial turmoil. He said that Smiles members could
use their smiles points to redeem household items at savings of between
20 and 30 percent off the normal retail prices. The Smiles Card is a
free loyalty programme card that enables customers to earn points from
petrol purchases at both Esso and Mobil service stations.
