The Petrol Dealers Association Malaysia (PDAM) has appealed to petrol
station owners to ensure that there is sufficient supply to meet the
demand of customers.
"This is in line with the government's directive to ensure
sufficient supply to avoid being fined under the Supply Control Act,"
said its acting president, Mejar Abd Wahid Bidin in a statement. He
hoped that the government would consider the proposals forwarded by the
association to reduce the burden of losses by the owners. This is
because the owners experienced losses each time the government reduced
the price of petrol, he said.
Abdul Wahid said the price of petrol was controlled by the government
and the owners had to sell at the stated price even though they
purchased it at a higher price. "The incident of depleted stock
last week was not simply caused by the owners or encouraged by the
association," he said.
He said the increase in sales after the reduction in petrol price
affected the stock level and the failure of oil companies to top up the
supply resulted in a depletion of stock in some areas. Abdul Wahid
hoped that the station owners would plan and control supply to ensure
the incident was not repeated.
