January 2010, during the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’
Retreat in Danang, Vietnam, Thailand Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya
held
bilateral meeting Laos PDR Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign
Minister Thongloun Sisoulith to discuss bilateral cooperation.
It was agreed that more petrol stations, highway rest areas and other amenities
should also be constructed along the route to promote more usage,
especially by tourists.
Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia and the thickly forested
landscape consists mostly of rugged mountains with some plains and plateaus. The Mekong
River forms a large part of the western boundary with Thailand, whereas
the mountains of the Annamite Chain form most of the eastern border
with Vietnam.
