Exxon Mobil Corp.'s Japanese unit, the operator of the nation's second-largest service station network, said it is considering selling some of its stations in Kyushu, one of the country's four main islands. As part of the company's long-term strategic focus, "Exxon is looking into new measures such as changing the ownership of service stations there," the firm said in a statement.
But the company said media reports last week suggesting it was planning a full retreat from the Japanese market were incorrect. The company said it plans to continue to put its support behind its Japanese retail operations.
It has been reported that on top of selling off gas stations,
Exxon was considering reducing its Japanese oil-refining capacity by
about 20% by shuttering facilities at three refineries run by group firm
TonenGeneral Sekiyu KK as demand continues to weaken.
