Pertamina has said that around 267,000 barrels of oil have been stolen from it since the beginning of the year, well up from the 94,000 barrels that were stolen in the whole of last year, and on the 8,100 in 2010. In total, the losses have cost the company $37m, it said. Most of the fuel is being stolen as it is being transported through the Tempino-Plaju pipeline in South Sumatra.
A spokesperson for the state-run oil company, Karen Agustiawan said that the stolen oil is being distilled by local people living in the villages around the pipeline and being sold off as diesel or petrol. The main areas where this takes place are in the Musi Banyuasin, Jambi, Bangka Belitung and Pekananbaru regions. “They have been well known to sell it to Tangareng, from where it is exported to China,” explained local police chief Gen Gutarman.
