The consumption of subsidised fuel is running over levels set out in the 2011 state budget, according to Pertamina. Motorists in Indonesia have consumed 34.42 million kiloliters of subsidised fuel, 85.02% of the annual quota, between January and October of this year. Premium fuel consumption is on course to exceed the quota by 3.87% and diesel fuel consumption has also increased by 2.44%.
The spike in consumption has been attributed to an increase in the number of vehicles on roads and, between Christmas and the New Year, fuel demand is expected to increase by 5-7%. The state-owned company warned that it may not be able to supply and distribute subsidised fuel to meet demand, and urged the Government to complete and implement regulations on subsidised fuel by next year. “We’ll try to prevent exceeding the quota,” said spokesperson Mochamad Harun.
