Indonesia: Pertamina Reassures Drivers on RFID Tag

Thursday, 06 June 2013
Pertamina Spokesperson Ali Mudakir has confirmed that the installation of RFID Tags on vehicles will be conducted for free.

Urging consumers to come and submit their STNK (vehicle registration), he said that the process will be quick and simple. "The installation will take three or five minutes," he said, speaking at a workshop and simulation for Indonesia's new fuel monitoring system.

The new fuel monitoring system is designed to curb excess consumption of subsidised fuel in Indonesia. Demand for subsidised fuel has exceeded estimates for a number of years, forcing the Government to revise successive national budgets.

Quotas for consumption of subsidised fuel will be issued to specific tags, with more allocated to public transport providers. The RFID Tag will be installed at the tip of the fuel tank. If a car does not have an RFID tag, its owner will not be issued with subsidised fuel.

The RFID Tag is designed to be used on one vehicle and if it’s broken, it will be replaced with another RFID Tag for free. Should an individual change their vehicle, users must have another RFID tag installed. "All they need to do is just bring the new STNK and tell the officer about the new STNK and inform the old registration number to them. The RFID Tag on the old vehicle will be deleted from the system," said Mudakir.
