The debate on fuel deregulation and pricing continues. The politicians
attempt to obtain consensus at various levels including the Indian
cabinet and amongst the key major political parties. Focus is now turning to forthcoming budget later this week.
Finance and oil ministers met on Feb. 14th to discuss fuel pricing and
subsidies, according to a senior government official. It is now
thought that the results of this meeting and all the attempts to find
consensus will be revealed in the forthcoming budget on Friday 26th
February.
The Kirit Parikh panel recommendations
of fuel price deregulation and fuel pricing reforms is very
much welcomed by all those in the industry. It remains to be seen
how much if any, will actually be implemented. As a result, all eyes will be on the Indian budget later this week.
