For the past 15 days, inadequate supply of diesel has been creating
anxiety and queues among vehicle owners in Chitradurga City. The
district has 42 petrol stations unable to supply adequate fuel to
customers.
The shortage has also resulted in panic buying and hoarding, creating
further scarcity in the market. Some petrol station owners
attribute this shortage to limited supply
and the rising demand for diesel on account of the increasing number of
vehicles here.
A petrol station owner, on condition of anonymity, said petroleum
companies had reduced diesel imports owing to increasing prices of
crude oil in the international market.
The shortage at the district-level is also believed to be on account
of the increasing number of trucks being hired by mine owners for
transporting iron ore.
Petrol station owner M.M.V. Swamy said that in Chitradurga city, the
number of vehicles had increased by 40 per cent compared to last year.
Mr. Swamy said that a year ago, he had been selling 6,000 litres of
diesel a day, which had now become 9,000 litres.
